I’m a bit late this month but this is a [short] list of the four books I read in July. A midpoint check shows I’ve read 54 books this year…
- The Cactus: A wannabe “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine”. There’s a lot said about the need for female protagonists in books and movies to be likable and have a sunny disposition, but seems like the author threw caution to the wind and made the lead character of this book extremely prickly. Ignoring that, the book itself was engaging although the plot was scant and the writing just okay.
- Stray: I get why this is a good book, were some beautiful lines of prose-poetry sprinkled through it but it did feel like it was written as a reflection for the author and not for the reader.
- The Summer Deal: Beach read that I read on my couch. It was fine.
- Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity: I’m not a “boss” i.e. I don’t have people reporting to me so this book was an odd choice in that sense, however I need to get better at receiving and responding to criticism both well-intentioned and not – this book helped with that.
